About Energy Smart Tool

What can Energy Smart Tool do for you?
Energy Smart Tool is an online performance-based building energy benchmarking tool developed by the Energy Sustainability Unit (ESU), National University of Singapore, supported by European Union through the EU-ASEAN Energy Facility, National Environment Agency of Singapore and Jurong Town Corporation Singapore. The main objective of the Energy Smart Tool is to provide comprehensive, reliable and accurate benchmarks of energy consumption and efficiency in buildings. This tool is intended to be a starting point in assessing building energy use and saving potential. It provides you with a direct comparison of your building's energy performance among the total cohort of similar facilities, which can help to identify the position of your facility, and to set energy and efficiency targets.

Building energy performance benchmarks currently available include
1. Commercial Office Buildings in Singapore
2. System Benchmarks of Commercial Office Buildings in Singapore
3. Hotel Buildings in Singapore
4. Industrial Flatted Factories in Singapore

Data source
The Energy Smart Tool is developed based on the independent national surveys of building characteristics and energy use performance conducted in Singapore and Malaysia.

The Energy Smart Tool (Office - Singapore) is based on 95 commercial office buildings studied by ESU in Singapore. The sample is found to be representative of the entire building stock in Singapore, as it covers a wide spectrum of each building parameter. To have a further in-depth understanding of the building energy performance, system level benchmarks are established based on the detailed investigations upon major energy consuming systems of 16 office buildings in Singapore. This also includes the benchmarking of carparks (16 buildings) and data centre (6 buildings) in Singapore.

The Energy Smart Tool (Hotel - Singapore) is developed with a comprehensive study of 30 quality hotels in Singapore.

The Energy Smart Tool (Industrial Flatted Factory - Singapore) is based on the landlord energy use for common area of 59 flatted factories in Singapore. The low spread of flatted factory design efficiency, and the large sample population indicate that the benchmarking data can provide a reliable profile of flatted factories' energy performance in Singapore.

The database will be continuously updated and reviewed to achieve reliable benchmarks.

Target user groups
Building owner, building developer, energy services company (ESCO), facility and property manager, building consultant, building related supplier and manufacturers, government agency and energy researcher.

Normal User and Corporate Account
There are two types of membership available. These are Normal User and Corporate Account. Currently, the Corporate Account is under construction and will be launched in the near future.

Registration for Normal User is free. However, the benchmarking result is subjected to the data input by the user. ESU does not warrant or represent that any outcome produced as a result of the use of the Tool is accurate, or will be the same as, or is indicative of the outcome of any official rating by ESU.

Corporate Account is designed for corporate users who own one or more properties. They need accurate and reliable benchmarking result of building energy performance, and use it for tracking of effective building management, estimation of energy saving potential, building retrofitting as well as for National Environmental Agency's (NEA) Energy Smart Building Labelling Programme. A one-time membership fee of S$2000 is payable for registration of the Corporate Account. The Corporate Account is also subjected to additional charges of $500 per facility per year for the manpower in the data verification and result evaluation. For more information about the Corporate Account, please click here.

Limitation
The benchmark is based on the calculated overall building site energy usage intensity, applying a number of normalization factors, such as data centre and car park areas. The site energy is the actual building energy usage.

Please note that this is a preliminary/ general assessment tool kit for building energy performance. Low energy consumption does not necessarily mean your building is efficient and high energy consumption does not always mean that it is inefficient. Many related factors need to be taken into account for an accurate evaluation, such as number of computers, vacancy rate of floor area, operating hours, presence of special building use (e.g. large ratio of retail area) and high energy use area and tenants, as well as internal environmental settings. For further accurate investigation, you may engage an accredited ESCO, which may be found on the website: http://www.esu.com.sg/esco/index.html, to undertake a detailed energy audit. Alternatively, researchers from ESU-NUS may assist in undertaking study to determine the building energy performance and potential saving measures.

With regards to the Energy Smart Tool (Industrial), it is important to note that this benchmarking system is applicable to landlord energy consumption (derived from common area) of flatted factory buildings which are naturally ventilated.

Additional building types
In the near future, there will be an expansion of the Energy Smart Tool to other building types. Including hotels, hospitals, schools, shopping malls and industrial buildings.

Acknowledgements
ESU would like to express deepest gratitude to the National University of Singapore (NUS), EC-ASEAN Energy Facility (EAEF) Project 68, National Environment Agency (NEA), Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) and building owners for their support towards the development of Energy Smart Tool.
