NUS/BCA/HDB Project
Project Title: Development of Environmental Assessment Criteria and Protocols for Residential and Commercial Developments with HDB.
Based on the surveys carried out among local building users and building experts, and the literature review of environmental assessment methods used in other countries including BREEAM, HK-BEAM and LEED, this project identifies and defines a set of design, construction and management criteria which are relevant to Singapore and the tropical context with respect to residential and commercial developments. These criteria are categorised into six groups:
- Sustainable site
- Water efficiency
- Energy use
- Resources
- Indoor environmental quality
- Innovation and performance enhancements
The project aims to develop environmental assessment protocols for new commercial buildings, existing commercial buildings and residential buildings. The assessment for new commercial buildings concentrates on the planning, design, construction and commissioning of the building and engineering system; the assessment for existing commercial buildings focuses on operations and maintenance; and the protocols for residential buildings consider unit, block, and precinct levels to facilitate the assessment for different parts of residential developments.
Benefits of the Research Works for Commercial and Industrial Use
- HDB will be able to apply the residential protocols to the specification and verification of new building stock, as well as retrofitted apartments
- A potential possibility to have the environmental assessment protocols adopted by a private sector firm(s) or a public sector agency such as BCA for the evaluation and labelling of new and retrofitted buildings for environmental performance, as have been done in UK, USA and Hong Kong
- Serve as a reference to building design professionals to adopt a more sustainable approach in designing commercial and residential buildings
